Scholars and practitioners increasingly accept business’ role in nation building. It is a powerful means of giving gainful employment to individuals who, through their knowledge and skills, can add value to a company and through that, to the country. The HUL story has evolved alongside that of India as a country. At each stage, it attempted to contribute towards issues of national importance connected with the FMCG sector. In this context, Leena Nair, now Unilever’s chief HR officer, said, ‘Business is about creating value for each group of people who have a stake in the business. I believe it adds to the economic prosperity of the nation, it adds to employment generation for the nation. It is about helping people lead a more meaningful life.’ HUL has consistently believed that what is good for India is good for HUL. Prasad shared a couple of examples at HUL that portrayed this core belief.
